Auckland is growing fast, and with that growth comes development. Whether you are building a new home, adding an extension, or subdividing, there is a good chance trees on or near the site will be affected. Protecting those trees is not just good practice. In many cases it is a legal requirement under Auckland Council's Unitary Plan.
Why Tree Protection Matters
Mature trees add significant value to a property, both financially and aesthetically. They take decades to grow and can be destroyed in a single day of careless construction work. Compaction from heavy machinery, trenching through root zones, and changes to soil grade are the biggest killers. Even trees that survive construction often decline and die within 3 to 5 years if their roots were damaged.
Tree Protection Zones (TPZ)
A Tree Protection Zone is a defined area around a tree's base that must remain undisturbed during construction. The size of the TPZ is calculated based on the tree's trunk diameter and is typically 12 times the trunk diameter at breast height. For example, a tree with a 40cm trunk diameter would need a TPZ with a 4.8m radius. This area must be fenced off before any site work begins.
What Should Happen Inside the TPZ
Nothing. No excavation, no material storage, no vehicle access, no concrete washout. The ground within the TPZ should remain at its existing level, undisturbed. If services or foundations need to pass through the TPZ, hand digging or non-invasive methods like hydro excavation must be used.
Getting an Arborist Report
Auckland Council often requires an arborist report as part of the resource consent process for development near protected trees. This report assesses the health and significance of the trees on site, identifies potential impacts, and provides a Tree Protection Plan with specific measures to follow during construction.
Common Mistakes We See
The most common issue we encounter on Auckland building sites is contractors ignoring the Tree Protection Plan. Fences get moved for vehicle access. Soil gets dumped over root zones. Trenches get dug through TPZs without supervision. By the time anyone notices, the damage is done. Having an arborist on call during the construction phase ensures compliance and gives the trees the best chance of survival.
What We Can Help With
We provide pre-construction arborist reports, Tree Protection Plans for resource consent, on-site supervision during critical construction phases, and post-construction tree health assessments. If you are planning a build in Auckland and have trees on site, get in touch early. The sooner we are involved, the better the outcome for both your project and your trees.
