After the Storm: How to Deal With Tree Damage on Your Auckland Property

20 January 20265 min read

Auckland is no stranger to severe weather. Strong winds, heavy rain, and the occasional cyclone can cause significant damage to trees across the city. Knowing how to respond after a storm can protect your property, your family, and your trees.

Immediate Safety First

After a storm, the first priority is safety. Stay away from fallen trees and hanging branches. Do not attempt to remove branches that are tangled in power lines. If a tree has fallen on your house, call your insurance company and a professional arborist. Do not go under or near the tree until it has been assessed.

Assess the Damage

Once it is safe to do so, walk around your property and assess the damage. Look for hanging branches (these can drop at any time), split trunks, uprooted trees, and branches resting on roofs, fences, or vehicles. Take photos from a safe distance for your insurance claim and for sending to your arborist.

What You Can Do Yourself

Small branches on the ground can be cleared safely. If a branch is less than 50mm in diameter and within easy reach, it is generally safe to remove. Stay away from anything overhead, anything under tension, and anything near power lines. If you need a ladder or a chainsaw, it is time to call a professional.

When to Call an Arborist

Call an arborist if you see any of the following: a large branch hanging in the canopy, a split or cracked trunk, a tree leaning at a new angle, roots lifting out of the ground, or any tree damage near buildings or power lines. Storm-damaged trees are unpredictable and can fail without warning. Do not try to assess structural damage yourself.

Insurance and Tree Removal

Most home insurance policies cover tree damage to structures (your house, garage, fence) but not removal of the tree itself unless it is blocking access. Check your policy details. We can provide detailed quotes and documentation to support your claim. If you need a formal arborist report for insurance purposes, we can arrange that too.

Preventing Future Storm Damage

The best defence against storm damage is proactive tree maintenance. Regular pruning reduces wind resistance by thinning the crown and removing deadwood. Trees that are well maintained are far more likely to survive severe weather intact. We recommend an annual check of large trees near your house, especially before the storm season.
